Telstra’s infrastructure arm, InfraCo, is set to activate a major segment of its $1.6 billion national fibre network buildout with the Sydney-to-Canberra route going live on June 25.
Framed as a “critical piece” of the broader Intercity Fibre Network, the route is designed to serve hyperscalers, enterprise customers, government agencies, and other carriers with ultra-low loss, high-capacity optical fibre infrastructure. The move signals Telstra’s ambition to stay ahead of demand spikes from AI, connected infrastructure, and next-gen applications.
According to InfraCo’s executive for customer success, Dino Georgiou, data demand in Australia could surge by over 30% annually through 2031, driven by generative AI, LEO satellites, and growing interconnectivity needs. “We’re on the cusp of a data explosion,” Georgiou said.
A New Backbone for a Digital Nation
When completed, the Intercity Fibre Network will connect every mainland capital city by FY27, with over 4,000 km of fibre laid so far. The Sydney–Canberra section is just the beginning, with coastal paths linking Canberra–Melbourne and Sydney–Melbourne slated for early FY26 and now open for pre-orders.
The network uses a dual-cable architecture to support both express long-distance connections and a “foundation path” designed to enhance regional coverage. This includes on- and off-ramp infrastructure along the route, a feature meant to spur regional economic activity and improve access to education, healthcare, mining, and defence connectivity.
More Than Just Fibre
InfraCo’s growing portfolio already includes 250,000 km of fibre, 133 connected third-party data centres, and all 121 NBN POIs. It also operates the largest subsea cable network in Asia Pacific—assets Telstra is banking on to meet enterprise-grade connectivity demands.
Three product SKUs are now available for pre-order:
- Dark Fibre: Delivers up to 60–80 Tbps with dedicated access and regional expansion options.
- Direct Spectrum: Supports 3.8 to 15.2 Tbps with fractional fibre-pair options and BYO/self-managed equipment.
- Wavelength: Offers fixed 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps services.
Enterprise-Ready, Region-Aware
While the headlines focus on hyperscaler and telco partnerships, Telstra’s attention to regional inclusivity stands out. From tunneling through rock to managing landowner and traditional owner relationships, InfraCo’s execution on the Sydney–Canberra segment highlights the complexity of national-scale digital infrastructure builds.
“Completing this route is a major milestone,” Georgiou said. “It sets the tone for what’s coming.”
