As competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, OpenAI is strengthening its leadership in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets.
The company has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, former President of Uber India and South Asia, as its first Managing Director for India. The move reflects OpenAI’s continued investment in the country as it expands enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, and AI innovation.
Singh will officially join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
Leading OpenAI’s Growth in India
As OpenAI’s most senior executive in India, Singh will oversee the company’s operations across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, government engagement, and strategic partnerships.
He will also work closely with businesses, developers, educational institutions, and public-sector organizations to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies across the country.
The appointment comes as India becomes one of OpenAI’s most important global markets, second only to the United States.
Bringing Years of Technology Leadership
Before joining OpenAI, Singh spent nearly a decade at Uber, most recently serving as President of Uber India and South Asia.
During his tenure, he led the company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh while helping expand Uber’s presence throughout the region.
He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, bringing extensive experience in scaling technology businesses across emerging markets.
Following the announcement, Uber thanked Singh for his decade of leadership and reaffirmed its long-term commitment to growing its business in India.
OpenAI Continues Expanding Its Presence
The leadership appointment is part of OpenAI’s broader expansion strategy in India.
After opening its first office in New Delhi in 2025, the company announced plans to expand further with additional offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
OpenAI has also continued building its local leadership team. Pragya Misra, formerly of Truecaller and Meta, now leads Strategy and Global Affairs, while former Twitter India executive Rishi Jaitly serves as a senior adviser supporting government and policy engagement.
Strengthening Enterprise and AI Partnerships
Over the past year, OpenAI has expanded partnerships across higher education, enterprise technology, digital payments, commerce, and content platforms.
The company is also working with major Indian businesses as interest in generative AI continues to accelerate. Organizations including Reliance Industries and Tata Group have emerged as early strategic partners supporting AI deployment and infrastructure initiatives.
At the same time, OpenAI has expanded hiring across AI deployment, developer relations, enterprise solutions, marketing, and partner management to support growing demand.
India Becomes a Key AI Battleground
India has rapidly become one of the most important markets for global AI companies.
Its large developer community, expanding digital economy, and growing enterprise adoption have attracted significant investment from leading AI firms.
Competition is also increasing. Anthropic recently expanded its presence in India and appointed former Microsoft India executive Irina Ghose to lead its operations in the country.
