REE Automotive appoints Hicham Abdessamad as Chairman to guide software-defined vehicle strategy

REE Automotive has appointed Hicham Abdessamad, former Chairman and CEO of Hitachi America, as Chairman of its Board of Directors, marking a significant governance transition as the company deepens its focus on software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms.

The appointment took effect on December 22, 2025, with Abdessamad succeeding Carlton Rose, who has held the chairman role since 2023 and will remain on REE’s board following the transition.

Abdessamad has already been closely involved with the company, having served as a board member since March 2023. His expanded role comes as REE continues to position itself at the intersection of by-wire vehicle architecture, AI-driven software, and connected mobility services.

During his tenure at Hitachi America, Abdessamad led large-scale digital transformation initiatives across sectors including energy, infrastructure, and advanced technology. His background in building digital-first enterprises aligns closely with REE’s long-term strategy to scale its software-defined vehicle architecture and data-driven services.

Rose said Abdessamad’s experience makes him well-suited to lead the board during a pivotal phase for the company, particularly as REE expands its software platform, connected services, and SDV capabilities. Under Rose’s chairmanship, REE navigated key strategic milestones, including progress in commercial vehicle positioning and fleet-focused solutions.

Abdessamad described the transition as a timely moment for REE, highlighting the company’s modular vehicle architecture and software-centric approach as differentiators in the evolving mobility landscape. He also acknowledged Rose’s continued involvement, noting that his operational and fleet expertise remains valuable as REE advances its commercial and software-led growth strategy.

REE Automotive is best known for its full by-wire electric vehicle platforms, eliminating mechanical linkages for steering, braking, and drive systems. Its zonal SDV architecture is designed to improve safety, reliability, and upgradability through centralized software control and over-the-air updates. The company licenses its platform to OEMs and technology partners under a “complete, not compete” model, enabling flexible vehicle design while supporting future autonomy and connectivity.

With Abdessamad now chairing the board, REE is reinforcing its governance structure as it scales its software-defined mobility ambitions globally.
