In his new role, McMullan will oversee data analytics, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence initiatives. His focus will be on the responsible use of AI to improve customer experiences and empower Westpac employees.

“Andrew’s appointment will accelerate our efforts in data analytics, digital innovation, and responsible AI,” said CEO Anthony Miller. “By uniting our data, digital, and AI capabilities, we aim to become a truly service-centric organisation.”

Building on Strong Foundations

McMullan will work closely with CIO Scott Collary as Westpac continues to deliver its UNITE transformation program. This multi-year initiative is designed to simplify banking operations and enhance digital services for both customers and staff.

Miller described McMullan as an “outstanding executive and thought leader” who has transformed data and digital platforms at global institutions.

A Proven Leader in Data and AI

Dr McMullan holds a PhD in Statistics from the University of Glasgow and brings extensive international experience in scaling digital and AI platforms. At CBA, he played a central role in building advanced analytics capabilities. Prior to that, he spent over eight years at the Royal Bank of Scotland, focusing on customer-focused data innovation.

Strategic Significance for Westpac

The appointment highlights how major banks are embedding data and AI at the core of their business strategies. With customer demand for digital-first services growing, Westpac is positioning itself to compete not only with domestic rivals but also with global financial players investing heavily in AI.

Miller concluded:

“Andrew will be instrumental in ensuring we responsibly leverage data and AI to enrich the experiences of our customers, communities, and employees.”
